ABOUT THE PH 5-4½ CHARLOTTENBORG

The STIN.com version of Poul Henningsen's seminal 1925 design is faithful to the original Charlottenborg, offering gorgeous diffusion of light which can make a space feel both airy and cosy in equal measure. Consisting of four inter-woven shades of frosted glass, softening and spreading light throughout a space, and a single strong central cable, it is both sculptural and understated. This allows it to slip seamlessly into almost any setting, making it the ideal addition to your home.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PH 5-4½ CHARLOTTENBORG

Released as part of the iconic PH series in 1925, the PH 5-4½ Charlottenborg was first shown at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, immediately turning heads. As with the rest of the PH lamps, the 5-4½'s innovative use of frosted glass in its shades sought to reduce glare without losing any light in the process. What set this design apart, though was the name, as it was named after the Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen, and it is certainly a design fit for a king.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Poul Henningsen

1894-1967 (Denmark)

Often said to be the first lighting architect, Danish designer, Poul Henningsen devoted much of his life to exploring the importance of light for well-being. Believing people should not be subject to the direct glare of an electrical light source, he focused on creating lamps that produced glare-free illumination. His self-titled PH series was his most famous collection and included the PH 3/2 Table Lamp, the PH Artichoke, the PH5 and PH 3½ - 2½ Floor Lamp.

"The technician should never forget that he is an artist, the artist never that he is a technician."
