HISTORY OF THE PH5 ALUMINIUM

Believing that light quality had a big impact on people's lives, Poul Henningsen began designing his ground-breaking PH Lamps series in 1925, with the idea of making lamps that softened the harsh, direct glare of bare electrical lights. It wasn't until much later, in 1958 that he added the PH 5 to the range, reworking the pendant lamp with a new anti-glare red disc and leg-mounted cone. This gave the diffuse light a warmer hue and made the old design seem shiny and new. In the PH Series you can also find wall, table and floor lamps.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Poul Henningsen

1894-1967 (Denmark)

Often said to be the first lighting architect, Danish designer, Poul Henningsen devoted much of his life to exploring the importance of light for well-being. Believing people should not be subject to the direct glare of an electrical light source, he focused on creating lamps that produced glare-free illumination. His self-titled PH series was his most famous collection and included the PH 3/2 Table Lamp, the PH Artichoke, the PH5 and PH 3½ - 2½ Floor Lamp.

"The technician should never forget that he is an artist, the artist never that he is a technician."
