A beautiful hybrid of the office and lounge chair, bringing together so much of what made Charles Eames' designs as unforgettable as any produced in the 20th Century, the EA 222 is a triumph of form, function and comfort. With its sleek lightweight frame and thin padded backrest and seat, it is classy and understated, meaning it can sit in almost any setting without looking out of place. And with its trademark all, supportive back and tilted lounging angle, it is a real Mid-Century treat.
Designed in 1969, during one of Eames's most fruitful design periods, the Soft Pad series marked a softening of the more industrial style that they had favoured previously. While Chairs like the DSW and DAR kept their rigid silhouette, the EA 222 and its variants moulded to the shape of the user, allowing further comfort and security. Set at a slightly tilted angle, the EA 222 also had shades of the Eames Lounge Chair, making it almost a complete summary of what the Eames's brought to their designs, and making it a true must-have for any Mid-Century aficionado.
Charles, 1907-1978 (United States) - Ray, 1912-1988 (United States)
Charles Eames was an American designer and innovator who pioneered new techniques, such as the fibreglass and plastic resin moulding and wire mesh frames. He usually worked alongside his wife, Ray, though he is often credited alone. In the 1940s, the designers began focusing on the new plastics and were excited by the properties the material held. They were able to mould the plastics into organic shapes that followed the shape of the body. This discovery led to a whole new look in furniture that perfectly captured the spirit of the times. The couple’s most iconic designs include the DAR chair, the DSR Dining Chair, the RAR Rocker, the DSW Dining Chair, the EA 108 Office Chair and the Wire Base Table. Many of these were first presented at the New York Museum of Modern Art’s Low-Cost Furniture Design Competition in the late 1940s.
