ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Juha Ilmari Leiviska

1936 (Finland)

Ever since his childhood in Helsinki, the art of building, creating and innovating has been part of Juha Leiviska's make-up, thanks to his engineer father's lifelong influence over him. After studying at the Helsinki Univeristy of Technology and qualifying as an architect in 1963, he went on to work with legendary designers like Bertel Saarnio and Alvar Aalto, honing his lighting design craft and developing his trademark style. He was made a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1991 and an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects three years later.

"To me, a building as it stands, 'as a piece of architecture' is nothing. Its meaning comes only in counterpoint with its surroundings, with life and with light."
