ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Bernard Schottlander
Bernard Schottlander was a visionary designer and sculptor whose work effortlessly blended art and function. Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1924, Schottlander moved to England in 1939 to escape the escalating conflict in Europe. Schottlander’s early career as a designer was marked by innovation and creativity, culminating in the creation of his most iconic work, the Mantis lamp series, in 1951. Inspired by the work of Alexander Calder, Schottlander incorporated elements of balance, movement, and sculpture into his lighting designs. His unique counterweight system and flexible metal construction gave the lamps a sense of dynamic grace, making them enduring classics in the world of design.
