ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Pierre Paulin

Pierre Paulin (1927), often celebrated as "the man who made design an art," was honored by French President Nicolas Sarkozy for his contributions to design. In the early 1950s, he studied stone carving and clay modeling at the École Camondo in Paris, where he developed a passion for furniture design. His early work included collaborations with Thonet, but his career took a major turn in 1958 when he joined Artifort. At Artifort, Paulin created a series of iconic chairs that combined steel tubing frames with foam and fabric, resulting in bold, sculptural forms. These designs stood out for their innovative shapes and comfort, earning him international acclaim and numerous awards. Even decades later, Paulin's work continues to feel fresh and forward-thinking, a testament to his timeless approach to design.
