The Poul Henningsen PH 4½ - 3½ Floor Lamp features the collection's signature petal-shaped shade that works to reflect light downwards and prevent glare. The three-layered shade is made from hand-blown opal glass, which is sandblasted on the underside for uniform light distribution. This provides warm illumination and an elegant design that works well with contemporary or traditional looks. The shade is supported by a polished chrome stand and sturdy circular base. The base and shade come in a choice of black, aluminium or gold coloured finishes. The PH Lamp collection also includes the PH 3/2 table lamp, PH 3/2 pendant lamp, PH 3/2 Wall Lamp and PH 3/2 Academy pendant.
The Henningsen PH Lamp collection is his most celebrated designs and was created to duplicate the lighting effects of a petroleum lamp. The prototype was introduced at the Paris World Exhibition in 1924, where it was awarded a gold medal and was nicknamed 'Paris Lamp'. The PH 4½ - 3½ Floor Lamp's mathematical-sounding name refers to the different widths of shades available. The 4½ refers to the approximately sized 45cm top shade, while the lower shades reflect the sizes of the 3½ model.
1894-1967 (Denmark)
Often said to be the first lighting architect, Danish designer, Poul Henningsen devoted much of his life to exploring the importance of light for well-being. Believing people should not be subject to the direct glare of an electrical light source, he focused on creating lamps that produced glare-free illumination. His self-titled PH series was his most famous collection and included the PH 3/2 Table Lamp, the PH Artichoke, the PH5 and PH 3½ - 2½ Floor Lamp.
