The Arne Jacobsen Ant Chair pushed the boundaries of minimalism when it came into production in the early 1950s. But despite its small size, the Ant Chair is surprisingly comfortable as the frame follows the contours of the body offering support where needed. Our Ant Chair is handmade to ensure it mirrors the design of Arne Jacobsen's original as closely as possible. It is made from birch wood and stainless steel, with a smooth veneer finish in black or white.
In 1952, Arne Jacobsen created the Ant Chair for the Novo Nordisk cafeteria in Denmark. It was designed to be small, light and stackable to maximise space. The original Ant had 3 legs to make it easier for people to sit around a table without banging into each other or the furniture. In the 1980s, a 4-legged version was produced, which quickly became the more popular choice for homes and businesses.
1902-1971 (Denmark)
Arne Jacobsen was one of Denmark’s most influential modern designers and a pioneer of minimalist Danish style. Part genius, part visionary, his creations included furniture, lighting, textiles and silverware. But he is best known for his elegant yet functional chair designs, the most famous of these being The Egg Chair, The Swan Chair, The Series 7 Chair and The Ant Chair. All Arne Jacobsen products complement each other perfectly, allowing you to mix, match and create your own unique style.
"Architecture tends to consume everything else, it has become one's entire life."
