This sofa evolved from the Barcelona chair designed by Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. Like the original design, it has the distinctive criss-crossed, chromed steel frame and plump cushions covered in dozens of precision-stitched squares of leather. The Barcelona collection also includes a two-seat sofa, table, stools and benches, all available in eight shades of aniline leather
Mies van der Rohe created the Barcelona Sofa as part of his design of the German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. It was initially designed to seat the King and Queen of Spain. Drawing upon inspiration from the Emperors of Ancient Rome, Mies van der Rohe developed a collection that 'harmonized the old and new in our civilization'. The Roman influences are particularly apparent in his signature criss-cross square frames.
1886 (Germany) -1969 (United States)
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect and is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of architecture. His ‘less-is-more’ approach to design became the gold standard for many generations of modern architecture. The simple forms and extravagant materials Mies van der Rohe used to design the Barcelona Pavilion have inspired many modern minimalist buildings including Capel Manor in Kent, England.
"Less is more."
Good Price
This chair is so close to the original I can't tell a difference. It is beautifully made with really high quality materials. It is the most comfortable chair I ever sat in. I am so impressed that I will be looking for more furniture from STIN. Shipping and delivery were great with no problems.
